How being a GOT fan brought me closer to iMiMatch

In 2011 when HBO released the Game of Thrones sequel, no one knew it’d grow to become the most watched shows on the planet. In fact, I didn’t hear of the show till late 2014 when a friend of mine wouldn’t stop rabbiting about it. I know, I live under a rock! When I eventually settled in to watch the show, I was instantly drawn into the dynamics of the realpolitik mirrored in the movie. Westeros, though a fictional nation, reflects the daily realities of the American society and many others. In Westeros, there is betrayal, racism, magic, apprehension, love, religion, blood, sexism, slavery, greed and war.
One thing that stuck with me after I watched the show is how much importance they put on class. In Westeros, there is almost no middle class. You are either a noble or a peasant; you either live in the palace or in the shacks. Identity too, is a strong theme that runs across GOT. We can see this in household names like Targaryen of King’s Landing, Lannister of Casterly Rock, and Stark of Winterfell.
In today’s world, having a household name is akin to having an American or British nationality. As immigrants living in the US, we can’t boast of having household names, but we can walk with our heads held high, knowing we have iMiMatch.
Being a member of iMiMatch gave me a sense of identity.
Sharing in the lives of thousands of Hispanic, Latino, African and Asian immigrants living in the states felt like a shield against the world. Yes, GOT is about power and blood, but it is also identity, and watching it helped me understand why identity is so important and why I need my iMiMatch.com community now more than ever.
